Anyone who knows me knows that I really like to read. I don't have time to do it as often as I used to, but it's still one of my favorite things to do. A few years ago I discovered the world of indie (independent) authors and it opened up a whole new world of books for me. These indie authors don't work with the big name publishing houses, and you'll be hard-pressed to find them on the New York Times bestsellers lists, but they are making their mark on the book world. They have stories to tell and they deserve to be heard, or read as the case may be. So if you enjoy reading a good book, and you're not a snob who needs a big name, then keep reading and learn about a new indie author that you might enjoy, and keep an eye out for future posts about other indie authors I'm discovering.
Anna B. Doe is a "new to me" author. I met her through our mutual friend and author, Micalea Smeltzer. If you followed my former blog, you know how much I adore Micalea, so I thought it only natural that the first author I write about on my new blog be someone that she recommended.
Anna asked me to read her soon to be released contemporary romance, Until. (Note: it is now available!)
Now the copy I received was an unedited Advanced Review Copy (ARC) and one thing I will say is that I sure hope Anna has a great editor because I hate to see reviews that rake an author over the coals for poor editing when the story is so good. I could tell as I was reading that Anna's fingers were working furiously to keep up with the story as it was running through her head. She just needed to get it out and with some polish in editing, I think it will be a winner.
The story focuses on professional football player Jack Daniel ("J.D.") Shelton and model Sienna Roberts. In reading the blurb, you'll realize that they both have some baggage, so when they meet, even though sparks fly, they both refuse to let a real relationship to develop. It's a story we've probably all heard before, and surely many of us have lived it.
Now if we're comparing the baggage of our two lead characters, J.D. was carrying enough for a two-week stay, while Sienna's seemed more like an overnight bag to me. I can honestly say that I didn't see J.D.'s backstory coming and it surprised me. I felt it really added to the story and made it even more entertaining. Now Sienna's backstory seemed to fall a little flat for me. Part of me was thinking, "that's it?" Although, being a woman, I do know that we tend to make mountains out of molehills quite often, especially when it comes to past relationships and broken hearts, but I just felt it could have been jazzed up a little.
As I mentioned, J.D. is a professional football player, American football. I am a big football fan. (Let's Go Patriots!!! Seriously, I was at Walt Disney World with my husband during the AFC Championship game and we found a little alcove in one of the parks so we could watch the game on my tablet. Hadn't missed one all year and certainly wasn't about to miss that one.) I know when training camp starts (late July), when pre-season is, and exactly when the regular season ends (right around New Year's) and even how the playoffs work leading up to the Super Bowl (which is always the first Sunday in February). So one little tiny minor irritation I had with the story is the timing. It didn't always seem to jive with how the season and the off-season would really flow. But maybe I'm being too picky. Wouldn't be the first time.
Overall, I thought this was a really great story. It certainly held my attention on our flight to Orlando. Now I just need to read the first Knights book, Lost and Found. (Did I forget to mention that the New York Knights is the fictional football team in this series? Oh, maybe because they're based out of NY and everybody knows New Englanders and New Yorkers have a rivalry going back to before my grandfather was born so I tried to forget that part.)
Anna's also promised us a Knights novella titled Forever, so I'll be keeping my eyes out for that one too.
